Prof. Leah Achdut has been a member of the Economics and Society Program team at The Van Leer Jerusalem Institute since 2007. She is a senior lecturer in The School for Social Sciences and Management of The Ruppin Academic Center, and in 2010 she was appointed associate professor in the Department of Economics and Management. During her work in the public service she directed research departments of The National Insurance Institute (NII) – the Israeli social security agency. In the years 1996-1999 she was the Director of The Institute for Economic and Social Research of the Histadrut, and in the years 2001-2006 she was Deputy Director General for Research and Planning of The NII and a member of the institute's Executive Board. Achdut has combined social policy making with research in the fields of social security and the labor market and on issues of poverty and income inequality. She was responsible for preparing the Poverty Report and The Annual Survey of The National Insurance Institute. As a member of the NII Board she chaired committees for developing research infrastructure and data banks and for initiating social projects in the community. She also participated, as a member or as an observer, in government and public committees and represented Israel in international forums.
In 1990-2006 she was a member of the Luxembourg Income Study Board and was the NII representative on the research committee of the International Social Security Association (ISSA). In 1995 Achdut represented Israel in the UN preparatory committee of the Copenhagen Summit for Social Development.
Achdut serves on the editorial board of the Social Security Journal, and from 2004 to 2006 was its Associate Editor.
