Words as a Connecting Bridge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">\u201cWhat is the point of an exchange of letters between two poets?\u201d wondered Mahmoud Darwish in his first letter.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">For two years the two Palestinian poets, Mahmoud Darwish and Samih al-Qasim, exchanged letters, which became cornerstones of modern Arabic literature and poetics. They were collected in the book <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanleer.org.il\/en\/publications\/al-rasa%CA%BEil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Al-Rasa\u2019il \u2013 The Letters<\/em><\/a>, translated into Hebrew by Dr. Hannah Amit-Kochavi. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanleer.org.il\/en\/members\/iyad-barghouti\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eyad Barghuthy<\/a> edited the translation, Dr. Tami Israeli was the poetry editor, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanleer.org.il\/en\/members\/dr-raef-zreik\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Raef Zreik<\/a> added an epilogue.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanleer.org.il\/en\/events\/%d7%90%d7%9c%d7%a8%d7%a1%d7%90%d7%90%d6%b5%d7%9c-%d7%94%d7%90%d7%99%d7%92%d7%a8%d7%95%d7%aa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">book launch<\/a> was broadcast live in March with Eyad Barghuthy, Prof. Yehouda Shenhav-Shahrabani, Watan al-Qasim, Dr. Hannah Amit-Kochavi, Dr. Raef Zreik, and poet Roni Somek. After opening remarks by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanleer.org.il\/en\/members\/prof-yehouda-shenhav\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prof. Yehouda Shenhav-Shahrabani<\/a> and Eyad Barghuthy, Watan al-Qasim, son of the poet Samih al-Qasim, welcomed the publication of the book. Watan addressed the commemoration enterprise of his father Samih, and his childhood memories of the close relationship between the two poets.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"\u05d0\u05dc\u05e8\u05e1\u05d0\u05d0\u05b5&#039;\u05dc \u2013 \u05d4\u05d0\u05d9\u05d2\u05e8\u05d5\u05ea | \u05e2\u05e8\u05d1 \u05d4\u05e9\u05e7\u05ea \u05d4\u05e1\u05e4\u05e8 \/\/ \u05e9\u05d9\u05d3\u05d5\u05e8 \u05d7\u05d9\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Tw6_pCYZDA0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">His comments were followed by three speakers, who all had personal relationships with the poets-authors. Some of them also read segments from the book in Arabic and Hebrew. Dr. Raef Zreik, who wrote the epilogue of the book, emphasized its importance and the enthusiastic response to the letters when they were initially published in the Arabic press. Dr. Amit-Kochavi recalled her acquaintance in Haifa with both poets, and stressed that she had translated the book with the intent of opening the eyes of the Jews in Israel to the very existence of the Palestinians and to their complicated situation. She said that of the entire rich body of her translations, this book was the most important.
