This is the 13th publication of the Gender Index, an innovative and groundbreaking tool developed by\u00a0WIPS\u2014The Center for the Advancement of Women in the Public Sphere\u00a0<\/strong>at the Van Leer Jerusalem Institute. It systematically monitors patterns of gender inequality in Israel, based on the calculation of gender inequality in key domains: political and economic power; education; labor force participation and segregation; economic security and poverty; media and culture; health; violence against women; time-use; and family status. The Index also addresses issues of diversity by looking at the intersections of gender with ethnicity, religion, and age, enabling us to see how gender inequality is a deeply rooted feature of Israeli society. The Index makes it possible to assign an overall score to gender inequality in Israel based on the aggregate of the factors that determine the status of women in society.<\/p>\n

The last few years have demonstrated the overall fragility of gender equality achievements, especially in politics. The prolongation of the war and the increase in security expenditures exacerbate gender inequality. This situation is particularly alarming against the backdrop of rising authoritarianism, illiberalism, and the erosion of democratic checks and balances in Israel. Policies that consider the needs of women from diverse social groups and address unique gender-specific needs are urgently required. These policies must be regularized and based on gender-sensitive data, such as the Gender Index's database. The Index provides a vital tool for decision-makers in government, public institutions, and civil society organizations in their efforts to narrow gender gaps and to strengthen Israel's democratic foundations.<\/p>\n
