He wrote on a variety of topics, all of which are at the center of our existence and identity: the creation of modern German nationalism, the Holocaust and its memory, Zionism, the 1948 war, Jewish-Palestinian relations, and more. In all of his writings he employed a critical historical approach characterized by deep human empathy. The main question that occupied him in his work was the role of imagination, memory, and human sensitivities in history and in historiography.
