Preface
Après, avec et malgré le 7 octobre
מהדורה מיוחדת | מאמרים מגיליון 60 בצרפתית
Theory and Criticism collaborated with the journal Mémoires en jeu on a special issue devoted to the Gaza war, entitled “Après, avec et malgré le 7 octobre” (hors série, automne 2025). This volume features in French several essays first published in issue 60 of Theory and Criticism. The following excerpt is drawn from the introduction to the issue, written by the editor of Mémoires en jeu, Philippe Mesnard:
"Five critical approaches emerge from the dossier “Critique de la guerre” (Critique of War), published in the summer of 2024 in the journal Theory and Criticism, edited by Shaul Setter, who himself participated in the symposium of December 14, 2024. These voices come from Jewish and Palestinian scholars of Israeli nationality who address questions whose urgency has not been diminished by the acceleration of current events. While some of the arguments developed may not fully resonate with the positions of Mémoires en jeu—except through the contradictory debate they invite—choosing to make them available to readers constitutes a gesture of hospitality at a time marked by withdrawal and mutual deafness.
Mémoires en jeu seeks to be a democratic space, with all the risks that entails, refusing to give in to the prevailing ostracism or partisanship, to factional positions or disciplinary enclosures for which October 7 and its aftermath have provided—if not the pretext—at least the opportunity. Here, Mémoires en jeu affirms its academic vocation as a space of contradictory research, inseparable from a polyphonic and dialectical—thus democratic—mode of inquiry.
Moreover, we present here long and carefully developed texts whose content and form reflect the difficulty of reconciling rigorous analysis with the desire to find—even in the narrowest sense—a path toward living together, despite the spiral of devastation following the massacres of October 7 and the ongoing oppression endured by the Palestinian population in the West Bank. In fact, the entire despite of our general title may reside here: it is this 'despite' that renders such hospitality possible."
