About The Van Leer Jerusalem Institute

The Van Leer Jerusalem Institute (VLJI) engages in innovative interdisciplinary research and has a deep commitment to the public. Since 1959 the Institute has been a leading center for advanced studies and for intellectual public discourse in crucially important and socially sensitive fields, touching on the main foci of tension in Israeli society. The Institute was founded by the Van Leer family to advance knowledge in the realms of philosophy, society, and culture, and it is supported today by the Van Leer Group Foundation in Holland. The Institute’s activity, made possible by its renowned researchers, helps shape the public agenda in the areas of culture, society, and science.

 

Aims

› To be an incubator for innovative ideas in the humanities and social sciences

› To foster excellence in research and to use the research findings for the public good

› To promote humanistic, democratic, and liberal values in the social discourse in Israel

› To define and shape the public discourse and to point out alternative ways of thinking about current topics

 

Activities

To achieve its goals, the Institute undertakes projects in three main areas: globalization and sovereignty; sacredness, religion and secularization; and science, technology, and civilization. In addition, the Institute is active in the areas of Judaism, gender, and the economy. In all the areas of its activity, the Institute employs a variety of methods and approaches. The Institute runs projects and discussion groups and encourages cooperation with civil society organizations, academe, and the government establishment, while providing a platform for diverse views and broad representation of various groups. The Institute develops and runs education programs and a variety of training programs for educators and community leaders, and opens its cultural activity to the public. The Institute cooperates closely with a large number of Israeli and international research institutions and conducts joint projects with visiting scholars from around the world. It publishes books, anthologies, and journals that are the fruits of its academic work. The Institute houses halls of various sizes, which host conferences and events, and a library that focuses on philosophy, history, political science, and religion.
