The Dostrovsky Forum for Music and Dance Education is formulating guidelines that will be useful for setting goals and evaluating achievement in music and dance education. These guidelines will also help educators and teachers evaluate teaching methods and pupils’ achievements.

The forum, named after Yocheved Dostrovsky-Kupernik who headed the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance for many years and devoted most of her energy to education, was established in 2009 by the academy’s executive committee. The forum has several dozen permanent members, including academics, educators, teachers, principals, and policy makers. They represent most of the institutions of higher learning and the professional institutions that deal with dance and music education.

The forum meets about four times a year; each year it discusses all aspects of a single topic. In its first year the forum discussed problems related to music and dance education in the Israeli education system and published two position papers on this topic (see the links below). In its second year the forum dealt with ethical problems in the teaching of music and dance. That year, forum members composed an ethical code that was adopted by the Ministry of Education and is now being implemented (see below). In the third year, the forum discussed deepening the dialogue between the theatrical arts and their audiences and it is now formulating recommendations. In the current year, the discussion is focused on how to cope with multiculturalism, a multitude of styles, and the absence of a professionally sanctioned hierarchy of creative quality.

In the coming years the forum will expand the scope of its activity to include national and international conferences; will invite additional experts from Israel and abroad to clarify special topics; will continue to publish position papers, reports of discussions, and conclusions; and will organize research groups on the topics that arise in the discussions.
