In the workshop held on January 2019, one hundred years after the publication of Rudolf Otto’s classic book Das Heilige (English title: The Idea of the Holy), an international group of scholars convened to revisit the book and its major themes from a variety of contemporary points of view. The primary objective of the workshop was to distill, from a post-secular perspective, notions of the sacred that characterize contemporary thought, politics and culture. The workshop concluded with a lecture by Prof. Philip Gorski of Yale University, in which he sought to understand the relations between religion and politics in a post-secular world in light of Otto’s concept of the holy.
